Carnatic vocal music is the classical music of Southern India including the modern states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. It is performed by an ensemble of musicians, consisting of a principal performer (vocalist), a melodic accompaniment (usually a violin),  a rhythm accompaniment (usually a mridangam) and a tambura mainly acting as a drone throughout the performance.
